What should you pay attention to when choosing a screen for the living room?
When choosing a screen, first match its aspect ratio to the projector (most often 16:9) and consider the lighting conditions in the room. A key parameter is the light reflection coefficient (Gain). Standard white screens (Matt White, Gain 1.0) work perfectly in dedicated, completely darkened cinema rooms. However, if you plan to watch movies in a regular living room with light-colored walls, a white screen will reflect light onto the walls, and they will reflect it back onto the image, creating gray blacks.
In bright rooms, gray material (Matt Grey) or an ALR tensioned screen (Ambient Light Rejection) works much better. ALR fabric has a special microstructure that absorbs light coming from the sides and from above (e.g. from windows or lamps), and reflects only the projector's light toward the viewer. ALR technology - a clear image even in a bright living room
The biggest challenge in home cinema is ambient light (sunlight or light from lamps). It makes the image from the projector look pale and washed out. Instead of buying a much more expensive projector with enormous power, a much better solution is an ALR projection screen. The ALR coating works like an optical filter - it captures the light beam from the lens and directs it straight to the sofa, ignoring reflections from the ceiling or walls.
For ALR material to work properly, the screen surface must be perfectly smooth. Any wrinkles or wavy fabric will distort the image. For this reason, high-end screens are equipped with side tensioners (Tensioned) or mounted in special floor cassette housings with scissor-assisted mechanisms.

This guarantees that the surface will be perfectly smooth like a sheet of glass – which is absolutely required especially with ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors. An excellent alternative without drilling into the wall is floor-rising screens (e.g. the Spacetronik G01 series), which unfold automatically upward using a stable scissor mechanism.
Electric, manual or floor screens? Choose a model for your interior
It is worth adapting the drive type and installation method to how often you intend to use your home cinema:
- Electric wall-ceiling screens: The most convenient solution for the living room. They can be paired with a projector (the so-called Trigger 12V connector) – turning on the projector automatically lowers the screen, and turning it off retracts it.
- Manual screens: A budget option for less frequent use. Modern models have a slow retraction system (SRC), so the bottom bar does not hit the cassette violently when rolling up.
- Floor screens (rising upward): Ideal if you cannot or do not want to drill into ceilings (e.g. in a rented apartment or with a suspended ceiling). After the screening, the screen hides in an elegant cassette on the floor or behind an RTV cabinet.

Tip: Installation height and safe cleaning

If a stain appears on the screen, never use window cleaners, alcohol or detergents! Chemicals will clean the stain together with the delicate light-reflecting coating. Avoid strong rubbing with a dry cloth, as you may permanently flatten the microscopic hard structures of the material.
Regardless of whether you have an electrically retractable screen or a floor model, remember a simple rule: never roll a damp screen into the cassette. Trapped moisture leads to mold formation and irreversible deformation of the fabric. Also avoid installing the screen directly above a radiator.
What should you absolutely avoid during care?
Using solvents, isopropyl alcohol or cleaning with the rough side of a sponge will permanently damage the material. This leads to the formation of bright spots (so-called hot spots) and irreversible loss of contrast. Treat the screen coating as gently as a camera lens!
